Colleges and Universities

(Recent workshop on `Working with English Language Learners`)

The number of English language learners enrolled in community college and university programs has skyrocketed over the past ten years, yet the vast majority of professors and instructors have very little training in how to support the ELL population.

Here are some questions that college teachers frequently ask about working with ELLs:

• What is ESL?
• Why are my ELLs so quiet in class?
• How can I assess what their backgrounds are in a non-threatening way?
• What can I do I engage an ELL in my classroom that seems to be struggling?
• What are some techniques that I can use to help my ELLs acquire the essential vocabulary in the course?
• What are ways that I can group my ELLs with native speakers to set them up for success?
• How can I assess what my ELLs are getting and what they aren`t getting?
• What sorts of modifications can I make to support my ELLs without foregoing and important content?

TESOL Trainers provides a wide range of professional development options to provide instructors with the necessary knowledge, attitude, skills, and awareness (KASA) to support all teachers who work with ELLs.

Most recently, we designed a year long teacher training program for community college faculty at Santa Fe Community College.  The purpose was to raise participants KASA on how best to work with ELLs.

We can tailor make any workshop series to fit the needs and constraints of any institution of higher education. We also have a for-credit option for any professional development workshop.

Experiential
All activities are hands-on approaches to learning that give participants the opportunity to explore and experience the guiding principles and strategies behind each technique.
Adaptable
The techniques and strategies covered can be used the next day in the classroom without having to research , spend hours preparing, or energy considering how it can be done.
Research-Based
Every strategy and technique is based on sound research of learning and teaching in the specific context of the work-shop.
Needs-Based
Every workshop is designed and delivered with the specific needs of the institution in mind.
