BEST PRACTICES |
"If students can`t learn the way we teach, we must teach the way they learn." Tomlinson.
What are Best Practices?
At the macro level, Best Practices is a term that originated as a result of Gardner`s research and others at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In brief, it was coined to connote how students learn best. Howard Gardner identified a whole myriad of ways that we use our brains to access, make sense of, and transmit knowledge and skills.
At the micro level, Best Practices encompasses a teacher`s ability to notice what helps/hinders learning and adjust his/her teaching to give all students what they need to succeed.
Caleb Gattegno once said, `students know more than they think they know, students know more than their teachers think they know`.What he so eloquently identified is the reality that all teachers face at any given time: what is that my students know, and how can I access it?
TESOL Trainers provides a variety of workshops on Best Practices that are tailored to the specific needs of the institution. Teachers who attend the workshops can expect to:
• Develop a keen sense of what Best Practices are and what today`s research says about them
• Acquire strategies of how to `take the pulse` of the students to determine what their needs are/aren`t • Experience 4-12 (depending on time constraints) Best Practices strategies and the fundamental principles that support them • Explore how those strategies can be used with any group of students • Examine concrete ways to put Best Practices into practice in one`s teaching context As with any of the services TESOL Trainers provides, the following principles guide the design and delivery of everything:
Learner Centered
The driving principle behind all workshops is that the leaner must be 100% engaged in the learning process. Every workshop invites the whole of the participant into each stage of the experience.
Experiential
All activities are hands-on approaches to learning that give participants the opportunity to explore and experience the guiding principles and strategies behind each technique.
Adaptable
The techniques and strategies covered can be used the next day in the classroom without having to research , spend hours preparing, or energy considering how it can be done.
Research-Based
Every strategy and technique is based on sound research of learning and teaching in the specific context of the work-shop.
Needs-Based
Every workshop is designed and delivered with the specific needs of the institution in mind.
