The SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) was originally designed as a tool for observing teachers in the classroom. During the course of the project, the participating teachers discovered its potential as a tool for lesson planning and reflection. Now it is used in all K-12 settings as a means of supporting the language and academic development of English language learners and native English speaking students alike.
SIOP is broken down into 8 categories with a total of 30 objectives that span its scope. They are as follows:
TESOL Trainers has designed and delivered workshops on Sheltered Instruction techniques for over 5 years. Participants who attend a workshop can expect to:
• Develop an understanding of the SIOP Model, its history, components, and purpose
• Experience model SIOP lessons and their principles • Gain skills at designing lessons that incorporate content and language objectives • Examine ways to build background for every learner • Use research-based vocabulary teaching techniques • Enhance the ability to make all input comprehensible to all learners • Understand how to scaffold any lesson for any learner • Develop strategies to increase student-student interaction in the classroom • Acquire strategies for integrating the four skills in every lesson • Increase student engagement in any context • Gain simple and effective means of reviewing content and language TESOL Trainers can design a SIOP workshop to meet the needs and constraints of any institution. As with anything, the following guiding principles always exist:
Learner Centered
The driving principle behind all workshops is that the leaner must be 100% engaged in the learning process.
Every workshop invites the whole of the participant into each stage of the experience.
Experiential
All activities are hands-on approaches to learning that give participants the opportunity to explore
and experience the guiding principles and strategies behind each technique.
Adaptable
The techniques and strategies covered can be used the next day in the classroom without having to research,
spend hours preparing, or energy considering how it can be done.
Research-Based
Every strategy and technique is based on sound research of learning and teaching in the specific context of the work-shop.
Needs-Based
Every workshop is designed and delivered with the specific needs of the institution in mind.
In addition, TESOL Trainers can also provide classroom modeling, class observations, and feedback sessions to all teachers. Incorporating workshops, modeling sessions, and observations (both of trainers, teachers, and peers) is a highly effective tool to support teachers as they inform and transform their teaching practices.
