Seven Strategies for Success |
From Renting to Owning Vocabulary |
This workshop, designed for ESL and World Languages teachers examines 7 strategies that support all teaching and learning. Model lessons are used to highlight these language teaching strategies in an experiential format. This is an interactive workshop that engages all participants from the beginning to the end.
Scaffolding Students to SuccessESL and World Languages teachers uncover the fundamental principles of scaffolding as we examine skill specific ways to scaffold students into success. For productive skills we look at ECRIF as the model framing a speaking or writing lesson. For receptive skills, we explore the PDP. Extensive examples are given for each.
SIOP for Language TeachersSIOP, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, is a framework for teaching that is designed to support the non-native speaker in the classroom. ESL and World Languages teachers can benefit from understanding the framework, the 8 components of SIOP and their 30 features that support both teaching and learning alike.
Teaching CultureCulture, sometimes referred to as the fifth skill, is a critical aspect of language teaching and learning. This workshop helps teachers understand the four components of culture and how to teach them in an empowering manner. ESL and World Languages teachers will examine strategies and model lessons that teach culture and intercultural communication.

Model lessons are used to get to the core issues of vocabulary learning and transformative strategies that support all learners. 8 low to no preparation techniques are highlighted as well.
Oral Language DevelopmentOral language development is critical for both ESL teacher and World Languages teachers. This workshop explores strategies and techniques that maximize the volume and the variety of ways students can speak in the classroom. Through model lessons participants connect the strategies with their own teaching contexts.
Teaching the Four SkillsThe four skills or four domains of language are speaking, listening, reading, and writing. These skills can be taught separately and together. This professional development workshop series examines both the teaching of each skill in isolation and the integration of all four skills. Plenty of examples are given of each type. Participants get lots of practice.
Teaching PronunciationTeaching Pronunciation can be challenging for all teachers. ESL and World Languages teachers will find this professional development workshop beneficial in helping teachers improve their understanding of what the four components of teaching pronunciation are and both strategies and techniques they can use to support students.
