Getting your NM TESOL Endorsement

The State of New Mexico requires that licensed teachers take 12 semester hours of TESOL related classes.  Half the these credits, 6, are to come from foreign language classes.  The other 6 credits must meet the state competencies for knowledge of the following.
  • Culture & diversity
  • Teaching English to non-native English speakers (ELLs)
  • Strategies to differentiate instruction and learning
The NMELL (New Mexico English language learner) Initiative gives teachers the knowledge they need to work effectively with ELLs; NMELL empowers teachers with research-based strategies and techniques that set every student up for success.

Don't Just get TESOL Endorsed; get TESOL Inspired©

Unlike the traditional 'sit and get'  traditional, lecture-based course, heavy on theory and light on real strategies, NMELL is an empowering exploration of practical classroom strategies that demonstrate the fundamental principles in language teaching and learning.  It's instructional coaching component helps educators transform their approach to teaching and learning.

Principles & Practices in TESOL

Picture
explores the fundamental principles of language learning and language teaching.  Through the lens of SLA, participants gain solid skills in designing and delivering productive and receptive lessons to improve English language acquisition in second language learners.  In addition to exploring the 4 skills, participants focus the role that culture plays in learning.  How TESOL supports the Common Core is evidenced throughout the course.

ELLs in the Content-area Classroom

Picture
examines the challenges that ELLs face in the content area classroom and effective strategies teachers can use to minimize these challenges.  Teachers unpack SIOP strategies and explore ways to prepare students for college and careers.  Teachers become adept at engaging students meaningfully, scaffolding students to observable aims, maximizing opportunities to own the content & language, and using reflective teacher tools to transform their own teaching practices.
